Out of Surgery !

When Joseph came out of surgery after only just under 3 hours, we were so glad.

It was now 7 pm, and Joseph was stable.

We were so glad he was doing well without any complications.
Praise God !

Angels are certainly watching over us and over Joseph !!
This is Joseph's third heart surgery.
1st at 4 days
2nd at 9 months
3rd at 7 years 3.5 months: 10-02-2008

He still has 3 more to go !!!

God Bless You and Keep You in Good Health,

Waiting For Joseph To Come Out of Surgery...

Trying to keep spirits up,

after a long and tiring day,

we all tried to occupy ourselves

and keep busy.

And pray, while Joseph was in surgery for his first Pulmonary Banding and placement of an Epicardial Pacemaker.

Finally, His Turn !

Finally, it was Joseph's turn.
At about 2:30 pm, the Dr came out and told us the previous heart surgery got very complicated and took a lot longer than expected.
Thus, the reason for the extended wait.

Joseph was taken back to have vitals taken, blood pressure, weight, height, oxygen saturation, and to change.
Then, back to the waiting room until they had a bed for him in the PACU.
Finally, Joseph went back to the PACU to a bed to prepare for surgery about 3:30 pm ish.
Joseph was excited, and asked to go back to the "other" room where kids came out of surgery.
I asked him why, and he said because he wanted to talk to everyone.
Finally !! 4:00 pm, he was wheeled to OR for surgery.
Joseph smiled and said "Bye mom, see you later. They fix my heart."
He knew exactly why he was there !
I gave him a kiss and asked God to bless him and keep him safe.
Now in for the long wait.
Surgery was anticipated to be about 4 to 5 hours we were told.

God Bless You and Keep You in Good Health,
Jennifer

A Loooooong Day !

Today is the day of surgery.
Thursday 10-02-08.

No food after midnight, no drinks after 8 am.
Be at the hospital by 11 am.
We settle down to wait until Joseph is called for surgery.

Joseph's open heart surgery was scheduled at 1 pm.
At 12:00 pm, the nurse came out and said Joseph's surgery was pushed back until 3 or 4 pm.
Uggggh ! After waiting all morning, Joseph is upset about being hungry naturally.
They allowed him liquids until 12:30 pm.
He had several apple juices and a popsicle to tide him over.

What a hard wait for all of us and especially Joseph who had no food since last night.
The kids made the best of it and befriended all the kids in the PACU (Pre-Anesthesia Care Unit) waiting room as people came and went.

God Bless,
Jennifer

Changing Hotels

Although very grateful to Best Western, we could not afford to stay there.
It just cost too much !

On the day of preop (10-01-08), the hospital at Lucille Packard got us a room with a cheaper rate at the Tropical Lodge.

While the room really smelled, we were grateful to have a place that was not so expensive that fit all of us.
Ronald McDonald House told us they could not accommodate us and never took families of more than 4.

Settling down for some time to relax, everyone watched Star Trek !
We were glad to be checked in.

May God bless you,
Jennifer

Stress Release

Shawna got the right idea as soon as we got into the room.

A little bouncing and jumping for stress release !

After sitting so long, all of the kids welcomed it.

They all enjoyed the bouncing on the beds.

And hanging off of them, before turning in for some well deserved sleep.
So far, this has not at all been an easy trip.

God bless you,
Jennifer

Nightmares and Relief.

The first night we got into town safely, and we very tired.
We had a reservation at a Motel 6 who refused to honor our reservation.
We had problems with the bank, and could not resolve them until morning.
Of course, no bank is open that late.
Motel 6 refused to accommodate us, provide a room, or let us check in unless we paid cash.
Having now no place to sleep and rather upset, we drove with five very tired children until we found a hotel we could afford.
That was not at all easy.
They certainly kept the light on, but not for us.
We do not recommend them !

Best Western near Palo Alto was very accommodating.
They said they would be happy to charge us when we checked out.
We were so exhausted., and very grateful to be able to sleep.

Of course, this is all our own experience, our own interpretation and our own opinion.
We will never recommend them though, ever !!

Heading for the Road

Today, 09-29-08, we were getting ready to leave for Joseph's open heart surgery.
We had to go to the lab that morning for a type and cross of his blood type before we left.
Joseph showed all of us his big owie and how much it really hurt when he got poked.

With everyone packed in and comfy, we make sure they all have fun things to do.

As Scott settles in for a long drive, we take to the road.
As we drive, we are already praying Joseph has a successful surgery with a quick recovery.
The doctors told us to expect 10 days in the hospital, with 3 of those in the ICU due to Joseph's arrythmias.

Blessings to You and Your Family,
Jennifer

I'm a Princess

Shawna ran into the living room so excited saying "I'm a princess. I'm a princess."
She quickly plopped down on the floor to show me how she "painted" her nails.
"See mommy, I have pretty nails too."
Apparently, she decided coloring her finger nails and toes was more fun than the white board.
Yes, of course, You really ARE a princess Shawna.
At least it washes off easily.
Smile.

Night, night.

Shawna was crushed when we told her we were going to throw the box away when she was done.
"No mine. My box ! That''s my playhouse!"

So, inside came her new "playhouse". Shawna was so excited that she made a bed for Mickey Mouse and decided to join him for a "nap".

My Playhouse

Shawna (2 and 1/2) and Joseph (7) were playing house in this big old box we were getting rid of.

Shawna was so upset with us at the thought of us getting rid of it.
She wanted to play in it.

Shawna and Joseph adopted the box as their playhouse.

They had such a blast.
