Joseph's BIG Heart

Did you know that our Joseph (Mr. T as Scott affectionately calls him) also had atrial septal defect and ventricular septal defect at birth besides the transposition of the major vessels? That means a hole in both the upper chambers of his heart and the lower chambers of his heart. According to the records from Estonia, it appears this is the case. The specialist's office has asked us to copy and send all the records from Estonia, and they will have them translated. They are looking more specifically for records related to his birth and original surgeries. I will of course do my best to get copies of all the translations, which would be very interesting reading. The holes in his heart probably saved his life because it would have allowed some oxygenated blood to get to the body however imperfectly that may have happened, especially considering the valves that don't function properly like his Tricuspid Regurgitation. Knowing all this, it is possible he may have had the problem with his heart rhythm all along. I am amazed he is as healthy as he is considering everything. I truly believe God had His hand on him.

Everyone knows Joseph has a big heart ! Well, he literally does on the left side.

"For I know the plans I have for you says the Lord, plans for good and not for evil, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans for a future and a hope." Jeremiah 29:11

Of course, we always can use prayers for the finances for all of this. Thank the Lord for His provision !!!

I found this information on webmd:
"Heart valve defects. Narrowing or stenosis of the valves or complete closure that impedes or prevents forward blood flow. Other valve defects include leaky valves that don't close properly and allow blood to leak backwards...Defects in the walls between the atria and ventricles of the heart (atrial and ventricular septal defects). These defects allow abnormal mixing of oxygenated and unoxygenated blood between the right and left sides of the heart."

Thank you for all your support and prayers over the last few months !

Low Bloodwork and Needed Prayers !

Michael's platelets, RBCs, WBC are all low again. They have been dropping steadily over the past few weeks. We can see new petechiae, new bruises, bleeding gums, tired more often, and joint pain again. Please keep Michael and his immune system in your prayers. We know if his platelets or hemoglobin get to low he would have to receive a transfusion or immunoglobulins and possibly be hospitalized again. He is back on weekly labs, and we will keep an eye on him.

Please join us in prayer.

Dear Lord,
We pray right now as a community of believers for Michael and his immune system. Lord, please strengthen the healthy parts of his immune system, and weaken the unhealthy abnormal antibodies that are attacking his blood right now. We believe in Your healing power and your ability to infuse your Holy Spirit in Michael. Lord we believe in your ability to help Michael, and our family. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

All of the above !

"National Center on Educational Statistics found that a third of parents who homeschool in the U.S. do so out of concerns over safety and drugs at their local schools. Another third did so for religious or moral reasons, and 16% felt they could provide better academic instruction than a traditional school. By the way, homeschooled kids do perform as well or better on state exams and in college admissions than do students in regular schools." From the Wall Street Journal

US Olympian Michael Phelps has ADHD

"In his youth, Phelps was diagnosed with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).[4] He started swimming at age seven, partly because of the influence of his sisters and partly to provide him with an outlet for his energy. He excelled as a swimmer, and by the age of 10 held a national record for his age group. More age group records followed, and Phelps' rapid improvement culminated in his qualifying for the 2000 Summer Olympics at the age of 15."

Open Heart Surgery !

Welcome Readers to the Richardson Family News ! This is also the same post on our blog.

Our trip home was the longest ever. We tried to save time by taking the 101 south and highway 152 (which is normally a 1-2 hour drive). It took us SEVEN, yes 7, hours to get just from the 101 to the 5 freeway. It was absolutely awful. A route which we have decided to never take again for lack of any gas stations or restaurants along the way. We considered ourselves fortunate to not run out of gas, which some cars we saw pulled off to the side apparently did. To break the monotony of the drive at 0.0001 miles per hour with a million other drivers, we started photographing everyone pulled off to the side. The apparent cause was a truck fire which cal trans was cleaning up from and blocking one of the two lanes. We passed out diapers to the kids for temporary potties, and used up all our snacks and drinks in the car. We were all thrilled to finally make it across, make it to a bathroom, make it to a gas station and keep our sense of humor in it all. Oh well, so much for the time saver. After leaving at about 2 in the afternoon on Friday, we got in finally at 5:40 am this morning (Saturday), and we are doing much better after showers and everyone sleeping in until rather late.

Joseph had his first "surgery" Thursday, the MRI of his heart and brain were done under general anesthesia. He came out fine, and did not even have one episode of nausea or vomitting. The decision for him to undergo open heart surgery was made official yesterday, all the doctors caring for him agree that it gives him the best chance. Surgery is scheduled for October 2nd. Preop testing and admission will be on Wednesday October 1st. We have to leave on Monday September 29th. He will have his pulmonary banding done and receive an epicardial pacemaker at the same time. The second surgery will be 6 months after that (assuming he responds well the first surgery) will be for the first tightening of the pulmonary band. He may need a 3rd surgery for a second tightening of the pulmonary band which would be 6 months after the second. The final surgery will be the arterial switch and will be one year after the last surgery. He is looking at 4 surgeries over the next 2 to 3 years. Each surgery will be dependent on the success of the last. As long as his heart muscle is responding, getting stronger and growing, then they will continue with the next surgery. The risk is that for some reason not all children's heart muscles respond; some just do not grow. Joseph's right ventricle is atrophied and thin, as expected, from not having to pump under the normal high pressure to the body; it has only had to pump to his lungs all of this time. Unfortunately, each of the 4 surgeries will have to be done as open heart procedures. I am fortunate that my job will be protected under FMLA. Unfortunately, this last week off was unpaid, and the time off in October will also be unpaid. We know he will be in the hospital for at least one week, in ICU for about 3 days and will be intubated the first couple of days postoperative. I anticipate needing 4 weeks off for that surgery and his recovery. The survival rate for the banding surgeries has been 100 percent, so we expect him to come out find with all of those. The survival rate for the children who have the arterial switch operation is 2/3. By the time Joseph gets to the final surgery, he will be 9 or 10 years old. The alternative is putting him on a heart transplant list. We know we will be driving for many many reasons including cost and avoiding the need for a rental but mainly to ensure that Joseph's comfort level on the way home is at the best. He will be able to stretch out a bit more, rest more or get out and walk as needed, and recline in the special seat we have for him on the ride. If anything comes up, I will be able to take care of it much more immediately. Our total trip mileage for the week was 1,395 miles. Needless to say, we were always glad to see gas prices under 4 bucks.

Joseph had an impressive 10 procedures/ appointments this week in the time we were in Northern California: an echocardiogram, 12 lead EKG, consult with electrophysiology, MRI of the heart, MRI of the brain, Holter monitor, consult with the cardiac surgeon, EKG prior to the stress test, the stress test, and a pulmonary function test. He was a trooper and handled all of this with flying colors. The difference in his lifespan is 5 years without it to possibly 60 years with a successful arterial switch based on the best information they have available to date. The doctors and staff were very thorough and took an impressive 2000 images for both MRI's, which are very important because once he has the pacemaker he cannot have any MRI's. He will carry a card (or rather we will for him) for the airport etc.

We also found out that Joseph may be deaf, to what degree we don't know. We hope it is just partial and temporary, and can be fixed. They found problems with his eardrums looking abnormal so they referred him for evaluation and a hearing test. I will make an appointment with an ENT and audiologist for these. They said it may explain why he is so extremely visual and takes such a long time to respond.

We hope to qualify for help with lodging through Ronald McDonald Charities, but we still have regular bills, lost wages, travel with gas and food to cover. Also, in order to minimize the amount of time the children will lose in school with the upcoming surgery, we are raising money to buy a laptop to take on the road with us. A laptop will greatly help with schoolwork while we are traveling. Our goal is one laptop for each of the kids, but we need at least one by October. If you would like to donate towards this, please go to our blog and click on donate. Our blog is www.richardsonstudios.blogspot.com

We picked Gabriela up from Camp Opehay (pronounced O pay hey). She had a fabulous marvelous time. She even got up on stage in front of the whole camp and their families at the closing transition program and shared "I learned that I am not the only one with Bipolar Disorder and ADHD." She says her favorite activities were swimming because she learned how to do the breast stroke and art where she got to do tie-dye shirts and socks and make jewelry. I was honored to receive her gift of earrings that she made for me. Each of the kids also got a sunvisor that she made. She says she met a lot of kids that learned how to behave, and she wasn't the only one who struggled with controlling her anger. She says if they can do it, then so can she.

As her parents, we were also blessed to meet the doctors who are the medical directors of the camp and received a lot of great information. We also met parents who understood what it is like to have a child with Bipolar Disorder and the struggle each of them have had with their child's anger, aggression, cycling moods and learning disabilities common to Bipolar Disorder with or without ADHD. We experienced that we are not the only parents either. We found the camp extremely well organized, the medical needs well controlled, and the staff knowledgeable and attentive to each of the kids. Each of the kids got an identification bracelet with their name just like the ones in the hospital to eliminate any medication errors. They are the only camp of its kind in the nation, and we tip our hats off to them. Well done !! We are praying for a scholarship to perhaps Gabriela can go back again next year. We believe it was the one of the most valuable experiences for her this year

It was interesting to learn that in clinical studies children with Bipolar Disorder and children with Autism have trouble in similar parts of the brain. Also, in children with Bipolar, regardless of whether they had ADHD or not, the area of the brain that affects the Bipolar and the area of the brain that affects reading and language are the same. Across the board, children with Bipolar seem to have difficulty with reading and language. That was eye-opening since Gabriela does as well. We received a lot of great resources and ideas on how to help her. Nothing the public school could ever have provided her. It was a huge gift for all of us. She also received a lot of goodies, very healthy snacks 3 times a day to be sure hunger was never an issue for behavior problems, and a minimal amount of sugar limited usually to an ice cream or gatorade. A win-win. I was also pleased that Gabriela took pictures with the camera provided to her by the camp, and made a lot of new friends which she had sign in her camp journal.

Schwarzenegger and O'Connell on the Homeschooling Decision

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger:
“This is a victory for California’s students, parents and education community. This decision confirms the right every California child has to a quality education and the right parents have to decide what is best for their children. I hope the ruling settles this matter for parents and homeschooled children once and for all in California, but assure them that we, as elected officials, will continue to defend parents’ rights.”

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell:
“I am pleased that the courts have clarified the right of California parents to homeschool their children. I have respected the right of parents to make educational decisions they feel are in the best interest of their children. I recognize and understand the consternation that the earlier court ruling caused for many parents and associations involved in homeschooling. It is my hope that today’s ruling will allay many of those fears and resolve much of the confusion.”

To the Many Parents Committed Daily to Providing Your Children The Best Education - We Salute You !

For all the private, independent, and public schools that have failed our children, we have found a means to provide each of our children what they truly deserve.

In a unanimous decision, the California Court of Appeal for the Second Appellate District today ruled that “California statutes permit home schooling as a species of private school education.”, according to HSLDA.

Excerpts from the Opinion:
"[FN1: We use the terms “home school” and “home schooling” to refer to full-time education in the home by a parent or guardian who does not necessarily possess a teaching credential.]"

Excerpts from the Opinion:
"We therefore conclude that home schools may constitute private schools. "

Jesus never held a degree, and yet Jesus Christ is our teacher !

Praise you Lord !
It is often said of homeschoolers that they are missing socialization. Is schoolroom socialization really indicative of the real world? Most people do not socialize with 22 people who are all the exact same age. No, the "real world" is made up of mixed age relationships....and here it is.

Gabriela is at camp !

Gabriela was given a great gift this weekend and accepted into Camp Opehay, a camp for children with Bipolar Disorder. It is the only one of its kind in the nation, and cost us nothing for her to go. We are thrilled she gets to attend. We dropped her off, and Gabriela was given a bag of goodies (a stuffed animal to hug, a water bottle for drinks, a camp t-shirt, and a craft activity all in this great lightweight back pack. We could tell right away the camp had thought out the needs of these kids including our daughter. They even have a transition program for the kids arriving and when they leave and go back to their parents. Gabriela was very excited to meet other children who were dealing with the same struggles as she does, and to know that she is not the only one in the world with the very real struggle of Bipolar Disorder. We were very pleased with the knowledge of the staff, the nurses, the counselors, the facilities, and the licensed MD Dr Chang who is the medical director, who took time out to answer all our questions. Gabriela is in the Bay Laurel group and was excited at the prospect of swimming, hiking, rock climbing, going on the zip line, and all the arts and crafts they have planned. The camp even has healthy food and moderates sugar intake for these campers where most of them struggle when they have too much sugar. I am sure she will have great stories to tell when we pick her up. Going to camp was something that we did not think was possible, and we are excited to add this great experience.

Homeschooling Victory in CA !!

"Los Angeles, CA - Homeschooling families throughout California can breathe more easily following a major decision released today in the Rachel L. case by California's Second District Court of Appeal. In a reversal of its previous decision, the Court today clearly upheld the right of families to homeschool under California law. " Pacific Justice Institute 08-08-2008

We will continue to follow the case for legal implications to homeschooling families.

Prayer Requests Again - Michael

The gastroenterologist at CHOC found what has been causing Michael's stomachaches the past six years - since Kazakhstan we believe. Michael has had stomachaches and headaches on and off for since we adopted him. Michael tested positive for a H. Pylori - which is fairly uncommon in children actually and not routinely tested for. Usually other problems such as Giardia or Celiac or Dairy or Food Sensitivities are believed to be the cause. Of course Michael has already had ALL of that testing which was all negative and then some. Even the gastroenterologist almost didn't test him and said Nay, he won't have that, but we decided it would not hurt at all to test and rule it out. It can be recurrent and can be fairly hard to erradicate. The usual treatment is Triple Therapy. Michael will be on 4 medications - a combination of antibiotics and medication for his stomach because he has had problems for so long and much more serious since April. Michael will also have some changes in his diet to help his tummy.

Also, after some additional research, we discovered that Michael's interest in chewing on metal things could be related to his anemia. Children with iron deficiency sometimes crave what their bodies need and chew on things that are not food. Michael takes a daily vitamin / mineral supplement to make sure he is getting enough of Iron and Zinc along with some additions to his diet to combact this as much as we can.

The good news with this though is the best prevention is simply good handwashing with soap and water, cook food thorougly, and avoid contaminated water. Michael was extremely malnourished in Kazakhstan, and it is extremely likely he picked it up their even with the caretakers doing the best they could in the poorest of circumstances. With Michael's poor immune system, we have to be even more diligent with cleanliness.

The autism is, I believe, is a secondary diagnosis. This means that all the other things he has haved caused the autism. Michael has global delays, but I know he has great potential.

I also learned that the headaches could be associated with the anemia, also something he has probably had for either a very long time or always !

Please pray for Michael's anemia and that as this gets better so will his headaches, and for his tummy and the medication and diet to be 100 percent successful.

We are praying for more of God's creative miracles. I was beginning to wonder if we were ever going to get answers to why Michael does certain things. At least we know the many whys, and we pray that God continues to increase our understanding so that we may likewise continue to help Michael in greater and greater ways.

Always Praying -
Jennifer

Praise Reports

The Lord has continued to answer our prayers. I was blessed with a small bonus at work, a gift card for $25.00 in gas - a gift from a coworker. Yeah !!! I was so excited. Praise you Jesus for showing us your divine ability to intervene.

Also, I have enjoyed putting up new pieces of art on our website www.richardsonstudios.com. Even though my time has been limited between work, raising children, training and travel for work, doctors appointments, phone calls for lab results, medical testing, coordinating all of it, and still making time for Scott and myself - it has been a joy to continue to be inspired by the Lord in all His ways !

Michael absolutely loves his bible class in school. It is his favorite above all the other schoolwork he says. Also he has been enjoying reading much more as we have been reading the book Heidi together.

Gabriela has grown a little taller and is becoming quite a beautiful young lady.

Joseph continues to be his naturally huggable silly self and makes everyone smile. He loves doing his ABC's on the computer and legos.

Joshua decided he wanted Mommy talk time and told me to come here in the front yard. He just wanted to share and chat. He says he likes chocolate and vanilla ice cream. His favorite color is yellow like the bee. He likes to drink Coke the best when he is allowed. I was most excited at just the outward assertive effort at communicating with me. When I asked him what he wanted to be or do when he grew up, he said simply to be "a dad". It was awesome !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was truly awesome. Most of the time it takes many many very long seconds to get him to talk and answer questions.

Shawna's favorite thing is chocolate milk and running back and forth, zip zip zip, through the house. More Yachet milk pease - she says. Now we know she can say it correctly, but I think she reverts to what is easy to say when she is in a hurry to go play.

After one of the kids erased all of Scott favorite PS2 game (he was 80% done), he was pleased to easily get back to 80% again and is almost back to what he had conquered in his game before.

Me I praise the Lord for sleep.

Good night !

Garage Sale

Today we had our garage sale. I didn't even think to take any pictures except this one. Really it was a yard sale, and it was a complete success. We made $20.00. While not being a lot, we appreciated every single dollar that came and were able to part with a few items as well. The kids took advantage of being outside to play in our frog "pool" as they call it. It was the funniest thing to see all of them climb in it at once and sitting in it together at the same time. Water is a wonderful thing. We also took advantage of the day to clean out our garage a bit and organize a bit as well. It is not done by far but a great start. Everyone thought we should do this again. The Lord answered our prayers. We sold a small table, some toys, and a few small electronic items. It made quite a bit of difference though in the things we did not have to put back in the garage. Yippee ! Blessings in Christ, Jennifer
